Terri Schiavo is gone now. this really bothers me. not really because they took her tube out and she starved to death. there are far more horrible things that happen EVERY DAY in the world, and no one cares. no one even knows that they happen. life goes on. the thing that makes my heart sink is the notion that we as americans and as members of humanity allowed this media circus to ensue. the OJ Simpson thing? yeah, annoying. Scott Peterson? yeah, move along folks. nothing to see here anymore. Martha Stewart? keep firing assholes. Terri Schiavo? there was actually some debate on this. but here’s the real kicker. The people that were advocating her getting her feeding tube pulled admitted that this is too much media coverage now. she’s dead and they should leave it alone. the fact that they were advocating literally starving a person to death may be setting in now. i’m not saying that her quality of life was good, or fair. or that “she would have wanted it this way”. how do you actually know? that’s the thing. you DON’T know. you can never truly gauge a persons reaction prior to any given situation with 100 percent accuracy. they may say one thing their entire life, but when faced with a no-bullshit assessment of their situation. people sometimes buckle. it happens all the time. it’s human nature. even the vatican has gotten in on throwing their two cents in, the pope wrote a few years ago, “The administration of water and food, even when provided by artificial means, always represents a natural way of preserving life … not a medical procedure.” this goes with the whole idea of if we were “humane” and didn’t want to make a person suffer, we would have used a previously established way of “dispatching” a person humanely, i.e. lethal injection, gas chamber, whatever. discuss amongst yourselves.
